Diaspora Dialogue: Supporting Somalia’s Education Revival
As part of Hindis' growing portfolio of initiatives, a key project launched in May 2024 in Minnesota brought together Somali educators from across the state to engage in a critical dialogue about the future of education in Somalia. Participants learned about efforts to rebuild Somalia’s education system following more than 30 years of civil unrest. The event featured breakout sessions focused on collaborative problem-solving, where educators explored practical ways the Somali diaspora can contribute to the revitalization and long-term development of Somalia’s education sector

Piloting a Somali Language Curriculum for Minnesota
Minnesota is home to one of the largest and fastest-growing Somali communities in the United States. Yet one persistent challenge in the education system is the lack of a formalized approach to teaching the Somali language. While some school districts have begun offering Somali language instruction, there is no standardized curriculum to ensure consistency or academic rigor.
To address this gap, Hindis has launched a pilot project to develop a 1st-grade Somali language curriculum textbook and accompanying teacher guide, both aligned with Minnesota’s English Language Arts (ELA) benchmarks. This initiative is designed to promote academic excellence, support language maintenance, and serve as a resource for school districts interested in establishing or expanding Somali immersion programs.
Strategic Partnership to Promote Foundational Literacy in Somalia
As part of our commitment to advancing foundational learning, Hindis partnered with Books For Africa to deliver a shipping container of educational materials to Somalia. Through this collaboration, over 41,000 books were delivered in Mogadishu, with the goal of strengthening access to quality reading resources.
This initiative aims to spark a culture of reading and support the development of school libraries across the country, particularly in a context where national literacy rates remain low. By fostering early literacy and a love of books, the project supports long-term educational development and reinforces Hindis’ mission to invest in sustainable learning environments.
